He was the son of John Henry and Harriet Davenport. Having been promoted to Lance Corporal in December 1913, at the outbreak of hostilities he proceeded to France with the original British Expeditionary Force on the 14th August 1914. He took part in the Retreat from Mons, and fought in the battles of Messines, the Aisne and Landrecies. During the afternoon of Sunday the 1st November he was struck by a shell splinter, and died in the arms of his officer, being buried near Messines, Belgium. He was an expert horseman and had taken part in the musical ride at The Royal Military Tournament in 1913, and also in the Cavalry display at Olympia in the Summer of 1914.
