He was the son of John Russell, a bricklayer’s labourer, born 1868 in Coventry, Warwks., and his wife Annie Alice Russell (nee Allsopp, married Q4 1894 in the Market Harborough, Leics. district.), born 1869 in Fleckney, Leics. Cyril John Russell was born on the 13th February 1899 in Kirby Muxloe, Leics., his siblings were, Edith Mary, born 1897 and Victoria Irene, born 1901, both his siblings were born in Kirby Muxloe, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at Woodbine Cottage, Barwell Road, Kirby Muxloe, Leics. In April 1911, Cyril was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at Woodbine Cottage, Barwell Road, Kirby Muxloe, Leics., together with his mother and siblings, Edith, a hosiery trade machinist, Victoria, a schoolgirl, Clarence Frederick, a schoolboy, born 1904, Thomas Alfred, a schoolboy, born 1906, Alice Helena, born 1909 and Frank William, born 1911, the latter four siblings were all born in Kirby Muxloe, Leics. Cyril enlisted on the 10th April 1917 and embarked to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 22nd April 1918, joining his unit, the Drake Battalion on the 12th May 1918 and serving with this unit until he was killed in action on the 22nd August 1918.
