He was the son of George and Mary Ann Cullen of Winstanley Cottages, Main Street, Kirby Muxloe, Leics. His enlistment documents record the following information. He gave his trade or calling as Labourer. His medical examination took place on the 3rd August 1915 and recorded that he was 5 foot 2 ½ inches in height and weighed 122 pounds, his chest measurement was 32 to 34 ½ inches, his complexion was described as brown with hazel eyes and dark hair, it was noted that he had scars on his left and right upper arms and on his left cheek. He gave his religion as Church of England. He embarked at Freemantle, Western Australia aboard H.M.A.T “Thermistocles“ on the 13th October 1915. He was taken on the strength of his Battalion at Tel-el-Kebir, Alexandria on the 19th January 1916, embarking on the 16th March to join the British Expeditionary Force in France, he arrived in Marseilles on the 21st March. On the 29th July 1916 he was reported missing in action, later confirmed as killed in action. A letter was sent to his father in England together with the following items of property belonging to Charles, watch in pieces, two testaments, pencils and a silk scarf. A pension of ten shillings per fortnight was awarded to his mother commencing the 29th September 1916. The pension was stopped on the 26th June 1917, the official notification stating that Charles’s mother, Mary Ann Cullen now has adequate means of support.
