He was the son of Jesse Cooper, a shoe trade laster, born 1861 in Anstey, Leics., and his wife Mary Ann (Polly) Cooper, a hosiery trade seamer, born 1861 in Wigston, Leics. George was born in 1890 in Leicester, his siblings were, Charles T., a schoolboy, born 1886 and William A., a schoolboy, born 1887, both his siblings were born in Wigston, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at 21, Gray Street, Leicester. In March 1901 George was residing in the family home at Chapel Lane, Ibstock, Leics., together with his father, now a coal miner, his mother and siblings, Charles, a colliery horse driver, Arthur, a colliery horse driver and Edith, born 1895 in Ibstock, Leics. In April 1911 George was employed as a boot maker and was residing as a visitor at West End, Barlestone, Leics.

We regret to announce the death of Private George Cooper, who was killed in action on the Western Front on the 3rd inst. Private Cooper was attached to the Lewis gun section, and prior to joining the Colours was in business as a boot and shoe maker, on Leicester Road, Ibstock.

BAPTIST CHURCH

A memorial service was held at the Ibstock Baptist Church on Sunday evening, in connection with the death of Mr George Cooper, boot and shoe maker, Ibstock, who was killed in action some weeks ago, as reported in our columns. The Rev. H. Cowling (pastor) preached the sermon, and referred in appropriate terms to the sacrifice made by deceased. The choir sang “The Homeland”.
