He was the son of Orlando James Price, a shoe trade clicker, born 1868 in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire and his wife Mary Ann Price (nee Armstrong married on the 2nd April 1888 in the Parish Church, Earl Shilton)), born 1868 in Earl Shilton. Walter was born on the 5th April 1892 in Earl Shilton and was baptised on the 21st November 1892 in the Parish Church, Earl Shilton, his siblings were, Florence, born 22nd February1890 and baptised on the 13th April 1890 in the Parish Church Earl Shilton, Horace, born 2nd January 1898 and Stanley, born 1899 and baptised on the 10th September 1899 in the Parish Church Earl Shilton, all his siblings were born in Earl Shilton, in March 1901 the family home was at 38, Hinckley Road, Earl Shilton. In April 1911 Walter was employed as a shoe trade clicker and was residing at 41, Station Road, Earl Shilton, together with his father, a shoe trade clicker, his mother, a char woman and his siblings, Horace a hosiery trade worker and Stanley, a schoolboy. Walter married Clara Pears on the 12th February 1916 in the Parish Church, Earl Shilton, Clara was born on the 14th February 1891 in Huncote, Leicestershire. His younger brother Horace was killed in action on the 13th November 1916. In 1939 Walter’s widow, a hosiery trade worker was residing at 31, The Square, Littlethorpe, Leicestershire.
Walter’s Army enlistment documents do not survive, all that is known of his military service is that he enlisted into the Leicestershire Regiment, being allotted the service number 202460 and the rank of Private, he was posted to the 1/4th Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment, and with this unit he first entered the theatre of war in France during 1916. He was awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal.
The War Diary records: 9-10 Oct-17 - The Battalion was relieved by the 5th Battalion LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT and went back to Brigade Support, with Battalion Headquarters at PHILOSOPHE.
