He was the son of Richard Preston, a hosiery trade worker, born 18th October 1843 in Huncote, Leicestershire and his wife Sarah Ann Preston (nee Chandler, married on the 17th May 1869 in All Saint’s Church, Narborough, Leicestershire) born 1846 in Huncote. Samuel was born in 1892 in Huncote, his siblings were, Letitia, a hosiery trade worker, born 19th April 1879, Joseph a stone quarry worker, born 1882, Sophia, a hosiery trade worker, born 26th April 1883, Arthur, a concrete trade labourer, born 1885 and Elisha, an agricultural labourer, born in the 3rd quarter of 1885, all his siblings were born in Huncote, in March 1901 the family home was at Huncote Villa, Huncote. Samuel’s father died in 1902 in Huncote, aged 59. In April 1911 Samuel was employed as a farm labourer and was residing in Huncote in the family of his widowed brother John (Jack), a blacksmith, born 1874 in Huncote and John’s son Alfred John, born 1909 in Huncote, also residing in the family home were Samuel’s siblings, Emma, a house keeper, born 19th July 1874 in Huncote, Arthur, an Engine driver and Elisha, a quarry labourer. Samuel also had the following siblings, Mary Ann, born 1870, Rebecca, born 1872 and died in 1900, Rachel, born 1st April 1876, William, born 1878 and Rose Ann, born 1880, all the siblings were born in Huncote. His brother Elisha fell in action on the 18th July 1917.
