He was the son of Arthur Herbert Oates. He was shot whilst escaping from a German Prisoner of War Camp. The citation in the London Gazette for 6th February 1918 reads:- “For conspicuous gallantry from the 10th to the 12th March 1915, near Neuve Chapelle, when he displayed great courage and the utmost devotion to duty in removing the wounded from the firing line to the aid post for three whole days, without rest and hardly any food. During this period he was constantly under very heavy fire.” Other sources show his place of residence as 10, Manor Street, Hinckley, Leicestershire. The War Diary entry for the events from the 4th to the 8th June 1918 records. COURJEONET. Special training carried out as follows:- Lewis gunners, Signallers and Tactical exercises for officers and N.C.O.’s.
