He was the son of the late Isaac Newcombe, a gas stoker, born 1855 in Hinckley, Leics., and his wife Maria Newcombe (nee Freer), a factory worker, born 1858 in Hinckley, Leics. John was a framework knitter and was born in 1878 in Hinckley, Leics., his siblings were, Joseph J., a framework knitter, born 1877, Clara, a schoolgirl, born 1887 and Annie M., a schoolgirl, born 1882, all his siblings were born in Hinckley, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at 71, Castle Street, Hinckley, Leics. In March 1901 John was employed as a shoe maker and was residing in the family home at 2, New Street, Hinckley, Leics., together with his wife. Sarah Ann Newcombe (nee Everton), a hosiery trade stitcher, born 1878 in Hinckley, Leics., and their son, Leslie, born 1901 in Hinckley, Leics. In April 1911 John was employed as a shoe trade riveter and was residing in the family home at 83, Factory Road, Hinckley, Leics., together with his wife and children, Leslie, a schoolboy, Thomas, a schoolboy, born 1902, Nora, born 1908, Jack, born 1909 and Isaac, born 1911, all the children were born in Hinckley, Leics., their sixth child, Annie was born in 1915. On Thursday March 1st 1917 The Leicester Mercury published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL MEN IN THE CASUALTY LISTS” - The following local casualties are officially reported. All are Private’s except where otherwise shown. DIED OF WOUNDS. LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT.- Newcombe, 4324 J. (Hinckley).
