He was the son of Joseph Bromley a shoe trade riveter, born 1859 in Hinckley, Leics., and his wife Mary Winifred, born 1863 in Hinckley, Leics. Wilfrid Lewis was born in 1897 in Hinckley, Leics., his siblings were M. Ellen, born 1888, Margaret, born 1891, Ethel, born 1895 and Francis, born 1901, all his siblings were born in Hinckley, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at 11, Castle Street, Priory Row, Hinckley, Leics. In April 1911 Wilfrid was employed as a seamless runner on and was residing in the family home at 11, Priory Row, Hinckley, Leics., together with his father, now a hosiery trade winder, his mother and siblings, Margaret, Ethel, Frank, born 1901 and Winifred, born 1902, the latter two siblings were both born in Hinckley, Leics.
