He was the son of Frederick M. Bircumshaw a Cotton Agent, born 1843 in Notts., and his wife Heleana a Hosiery Worker, born 1845 in Lenton, Notts. Harry was born in 1884 in Lenton, Notts., he had one sibling, a brother Bertie, born 1887 in Lenton, Notts., in April 1891 he was residing in the family home at 1, Warwick Street, Lenton, Notts., in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Lenton, Holy Trinity, this being the home of his widowed maternal grandmother, Ann Pearson a Grocer and Provision Dealer, born 1820 in Radcliffe, Notts., also residing with the family were his widowed maternal aunt, Zillah Ellis a Cotton Winder, born 1850 in Lenton, Notts., and her children, Arthur Ellis, born 1875 and Edith Ellis, born 1876, both children were born in Lenton, Notts. In March 1901 Harry was employed as a Hosiery Folder and was residing in the family home at 70, Upper Bond Street, Hinckley, Leics., in the Ecclesiastical Parish of Hinckley, St. Mary’s, together with his widowed mother and siblings, Ellen, born 1868 in Old Lenton, Notts. and Bertie. In April 1911 Harry was employed as a Hosiery Warehouseman and was residing in the family home at 12, Albert Road, Hinckley, Leics., together with his widowed mother and brother Bertie. Harry was recorded in the Hinckley, Leics. Registration District as having died in the quarter, October, November, December 1919. His younger brother Bertie died of wounds received in action. The medal index card shows that he was awarded the 1915 Star, roll F/3 B1, page 56 and the British and Victory Medals, roll F/102 B25, page 3029. In addition he was awarded the Silver War Badge, SWB List TF/285. Harry was shown to have first entered the theatre of war in France on the 28th February 1915, being discharged due to wounds on the 9th March 1917.
