He was the son of James Almey a Carpenter, born 1842 in Broughton Astley, Leicestershire and his wife Caroline, born 1836 in Bransford, Worcestershire. Leonard was born in 1879 in Leicester, his siblings were Annie, born 1864 in Broughton Astley, Leicestershire, William, born 1866 in Sheffield, Yorkshire, John M., born 1868, George A., born 1871, Frederick J., born 1873 and Ruth S., born 1876, the latter four siblings were all born in Leicester, in 1881 the family home was at 118, Syston Street, Leicester. In 1891 Leonard was residing in the family home at 5, Jarvis Street, Leicester, his father having remarried Betsy Almey who was born in 1853 in Leicester. In April 1911 Leonard was was employed as an Iron Foundry Labourer and was residing at 15, Providence Place, Leicester as a boarder with his sister Annie together with her husband and family. The War Diary for the 29th to the 31st October 1916 records. The whole Battalion employed in working parties under the ROYAL ENGINEERS. All men had baths and clean clothing. 25% of men allowed passes to neighbouring villages. During the month casualties have been 1 officer wounded, 7 other ranks killed and 24 wounded. Strength of the Battalion being now 26 officers and 650 other ranks.
