He was the son of Edward Wightman Atkin a Carpenter and Joiner, born 1867 in Shepshed, Leicestershire and his wife Mary, born 1866 in Little Chester, Derbyshire. John Edward was born in 1892 in Shepshed, Leicestershire, his sibling a brother Leslie Leonard was born in 1899 in Shepshed, Leicestershire. In March 1901 the family home was at Brittania Streeet, Shepshed, Leicestershire in the Parish of St. Botolph's. In April 1911 John was employed as a Joiner and was residing in the family home at Belton Street, Shepshed, Leicestershire.
