He was the grandson of Edward Martin, a builder, born in Great Bowden, Leics., and his wife Mary Ann, born 1845 in Bedford. John Horace was born in 1888 in Marylebone, Middlesex, his paternal uncles and aunts were, Wilfred G., a bricklayer’s labourer, born 1874, Blanche, a schoolgirl, born 1880, Frank E., a schoolboy, born 1882 and Emma, a schoolgirl, born 1886, all his uncles and aunts were born in Great Bowden, Leics., also residing with him was his cousin Arthur, a schoolboy, born 1886 in Bedford, in April 1891 his grandparents family home was at Stocks Green, Great Bowden, Leics., John’s mother Rosa Martin, was born in the 3rd quarter of 1873 in Great Bowden, Leics., and was employed as a domestic house parlour maid and was residing as a servant at 1, Portland Street, Marylebone, Middx. In the 3rd quarter of 1896 John’s mother married Henry Bullock in the Marylebone, Middx., district. In March 1901 John was residing in his paternal grandfather’s home at 20, Langton Road, Great Bowden, Leics., together with his grandfather, a builder, his wife and their children, Frank, a bricklayer, Emma and his cousin Arthur, a builder’s carter. John’s mother was residing in at 4, Portland Terrace, Hastings St. Mary in the Castle, Hastings, Sussex together with her husband Henry, who was living on his own means, born 1866 in St. John’s Wood, Middx. In April 1911 John was employed as a general labourer and was residing in his grandfather’s home at Fern House, Great Bowden, Leics., together with his widowed grandfather, a master builder, his daughter Emma, and his cousin Arthur, a bricklayer. His mother continued to reside at 4, Portland Terrace, Hastings, Sussex with her husband who was living on his own means. John enlisted into the Royal Flying Corps on the 6th October 1915 for the duration of the war, and was allocated the service number 147706. His medical examination recorded that he was 5 foot 9 inches in height and he had a chest measurement of 30½ inches. He gave his trade or calling as rubber hand and his father, Henry Bullock of Channel View, Edgar Road, Hastings as his next of kin. His record of service shows that he served in France with the British Expeditionary Force from the 1/6/16. He was admitted to the 22nd General Hospital, Camiers, France suffering from diarrhoea on the 1/12/16. Transferred to the 24th General Hospital, Etaples, France suffering from dysentery, 29/12/16 – 6/1/17. Transferred to England and admitted to Hospital in Barton on Spa, New Milton, Hants 6/1/17 – 17/2/17. Returned to War Duty, 9/8/17. Admitted to 3rd Canadian Stationary Hospital, Doullens, France suffering from impetigo, 28/8/17 – 8/10/18. Admitted to 26th General Hospital in Etaples, France suffering from abrasions to knees, 26/10/17. Admitted to War Hospital, Gosforth, Newcastle on Tyne, suffering from an accidental injury to his left thigh. 30/10/17. Tranferred to the newly formed Royal Air Force as a Private II, 1/4/18. Died at the 4th Northern General Hospital in Lincoln, from influenza and pneumonia, 22/11/18.
