Michael was the son of Major Edward Gibson Gillilan, DSO, DL, JP and his wife. His siblings were Joan, Pamela and Robert, who served as Captain in the Coldstream Guards. His wife was GW Gillilan, of Longstowe.
His father was a prominent figure in Market Harborough and a former High Sheriff of Leicestershire. He had served with the Coldstream Guards and saw service in the South African and First World Wars. During WW2 he was second-in-command of the area Home Guard.
