He was the son of Mr and Mrs R. Freeman of Glenfield, Leics. The War Diary for the 11th January records that the Battalion entrained at 6.00pm detrained at the Asylum, Ypres and relieved 2nd Bn. Sherwood Foresters in Left sector at Wieltje. Distribution B Coy B 11, 12, 13. A Coy 2 platoons ‘S’ Line, 2 platoons ‘X’ Line. D Coy Canal 2 platoons, St. Jean defences 2 platoons. C Coy Canal Bank, M.G. and Bombers as usual. Today’s entry reads:- Very quiet period indeed. B Coy sent out patrols nightly under 2nd Lt. F. B. Robertson to find out strength of German barbed wire opposite B.11, also positions of listening posts etc. German listening post located in Old Canadian Trench which runs NW and SE about 200 yards in front of German line. (St. Jean map sheet 28. C 22 D 5.10 to 8.4). German wire reported very strong and in excellent repair. Composition - , 1st row of concertina wire heavily barbed, the meshes being only ½ inch apart, then ordinary wire entanglements about 12 yards thick with iron uprights, very strong.
