He was the son of John Baldwin a stone quarry labourer, born 1854 in Sunbridge, Kent and his wife Harriett Baldwin (nee Harper, married in the 4th quarter of 1892 in the Blaby, Leicestershire district), born 1859 in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire. Harry was born in the 3rd quarter of 1897 in Enderby, Leicestershire, he had one sibling, Alice, born 1895 in Enderby, also living in the family home were Harry’s half blood siblings, James Harper, a stone quarry labourer, born 1883 and Rose Harper, a Griswold stocking frame knitter, born 1886, the latter two were both born in Croft, Leicestershire and Fred Harper, a stone breaker, born 14th December 1884 in Mountsorrel, in March 1901 the family home was in Conery Lane, Enderby. In April 1911 Harry was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home in Conery Lane, Enderby, together with his father, a farm labourer, his mother and siblings, Alice, a shoe trade machinist. Mabel Esther, born 26th October 1901 and Alfred Aubrey, born 1902, the latter two siblings were both born in Enderby. Harry was interred in St. John the Baptist Churchyard on the 12th May 1919.
Harry attested into the Army on a Short Service engagement (For the Duration of the War, with the Colours and in the Army Reserve.) on the 14th February 1916 in Leicester. He gave his age as 18 years and 8 months and his trade or calling as shoe trade pressman. He gave his religion as Church of England. After attestation on the 14/2/16 in Leicester he was transferred as Private, service number 30949 to the Army Reserve on the 14/2/16. Mobilized on the 15/6/16. Posted to the Leicestershire Regiment Depot on the 15/6/16. Posted to the Garrison Battalion Leicestershire Regiment on the 15/6/16. Promoted unpaid Lance Corporal at Easington on the 13/4/17. Embarked from Folkestone to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 21/6/17. Disembarked on the 22/6/17. Posted to 12th Infantry Brigade Depot, Calais on the 23/6/17. Posted to the 9th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment on the 23/6/17. Posted to the 1/4th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment on the 9/7/17. Joined the 1/4th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, in the field on the 17/7/17. Granted leave from the 13/2/18 to the 27/2/18. Suffered a gunshot wound to the left foot, in the field on the 29/9/18. Admitted to the 141st Field Ambulance, in the field on the 29/9/18. Transferred to the 47th Casualty Clearing Station, in the field on the 29/9/18. Admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital, Rouen on the 30/9/18. Transferred to England aboard Hospital Ship Western Australia on the 3/10/18. Posted to the Depot, Leicestershire Regiment on the 5/10/18. Admitted to the 2nd Northern General Hospital, Leeds on the 9/12/18. Discharged from Hospital on the 30/12/18. Discharged, as being no longer physically fit for war service on the 7/2/19. A final report from the 2nd Northern General Hospital, Leeds, states: Healed wound front of ankle, no limitation of movement, some soreness after walking. Discharged as permanently unfit. He received a first award of a £30.00 Gratuity. A summary of his service records: Home Service, 15/6/16 – 18/9/16, 96 days. British Expeditionary Force, France, 19/9/16 – 12/4/17, 206 days. Home Service, 13/4/17 – 21/6/17, 70 days. British Expeditionary Force, France, 22/6/17 – 4/10/18, 1 year 105 days. Home Service, 5/10/18 – 7/2/19, 126 days. Total service 2 years 238 days. He was awarded the British War and Victory medals and additionally the Silver War Badge, No. B.185594.
