He was the son of John Smith, a shepherd, born 1851 in Enderby, Leicestershire and his wife Catherine Smith, born 1852 in Bushby, Leicestershire. Harry was born in 1883 in Lubbesthorpe, Leicestershire, his siblings were, Ada, born 1880, Edith, born 1884 and John, born 1886, all his siblings were born in Lubbesthorpe, in April 1891 the family home was at The Old House, Leicester and Hinckley Turnpike, Lubbesthorpe. In March 1901 Harry was employed as a farm stock man and was residing in the family home at The Old House Farm, Lubbesthorpe, together with his father, a farm wagoner, his mother and siblings, Emily, a dressmaker, born 1876 in Bushby, John, a plough boy and Frances, born 1892 in Lubbesthorpe. In April 1911 Harry was employed as a clay miner and was residing in the family home in Rawson Street, Enderby, together with his wife Florence Ada Smith (nee Wood, married on the 24th June 1905 in St. John the Baptist Church, Enderby), born 5th February 1883 in Leicester and their daughter Frances, born 23rd May 1910 in Enderby and baptised on the 18th July 1910 in the parish church, Enderby, Harry and Florence also had a son, Harry born 6th January 1912 who was baptised on the 10th March 1912 in the parish church, Enderby. Harry was awarded the British War and Victory medals. In 1939 Harry’s widow Florence was residing in the family home at 7, Rawson Street, Enderby. Frances pre deceased Harry’s widow, she died in May 1913 and was interred on the 22nd May 1913 in St. John the Baptist Churchyard, Enderby.
