He was the husband of Mary Ann Stanley, (nee Herbert, married Q4 1911 in the Hinckley, Leics. district), born 1888 in Barwell, Leics., of 22, Heath Lane, Earl Shilton, Leics. Richard had served for ten months in the 1st/1st Northern Cyclists Battalion, Northumberland Fusilers, before he enlisted on the 9th December 1915 into the Leicestershire Regt., and was subsequently posted to the Nottinghamshire and Derby Regt., after two months he transferred to the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, the Royal Naval Division on the 19th June 1917, and embarked to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 9th July 1917 where he joined his unit, the Anson Battalion on the 30th August 1917 and served with this unit until he was detached from active service on the 7th December 1917 suffering from inflammation of connective tissue in his right foot. He re-joined the Anson Battalion on the 14th January 1918 and was detached from active service on the 19th January 1918 suffering from trench feet. He re-joined the Anson Battalion on the 20th February 1918 and served with this unit until during a raid on enemy positions, he was reported as missing, later presumed killed in action on the 25th May 1918.
