He was the son of Herbert Bateman a Coal Miner, born 1871 in Bagworth, Leicestershire and his wife Emily, born 1873 in Newbold Verdon, Leicestershire. Charles Edward was born in 1895 in Barlestone, Leicestershire, he was residing with his widowed mother Emily a Hosiery Stitcher together with his siblings, Walter H., born 1892 in Newbold Verdon, Leicestershire and Peter, born 1893 in Barlestone, Leicestershire, in March 1901 the family home was at 148, High Street, Earl Shilton, Leicestershire. In April 1911 Charles was employed as a Boot Finisher and was residing in the family home at Highfield Street, Earl Shilton, Leicestershire together with his step father Thomas Bonshor a Boot Maker, born 1869 in Leicester and his mother and siblings Walter, Peter and George, born 1897 in Newbold Verdon, Leicestershire and also his half brothers and sisters, Emily Bonshor, born 1904 in Newbold Verdon, Leicestershire, Gladys Bonshor, born 1906, Zileh Bonshor, born 1907 and Reginald Bonshor, born 1909, all the latter four children were born in Earl Shilton, Leicestershire.
