He was the son of Henry Burrows, born 1857 in Croxton Kerrial, Leicestershire and his wife Lucy Burrows (nee Allen, married in the 4th quarter of 1877 in the Grantham, Lincolnshire district), born 1856 in Saltby, Leicestershire. Walter was born in the 2nd qurter of 1897 in Croxton Kerrial, in March 1901 Walter was absent from the family home at Back Road, Croxton Kerrial, residing there was his father, an ironstone labourer, his mother and siblings, George William, born 1891 and Thomas born in the 3rd quarter of 1893, both siblings were born in Croxton Kerrial. It was noted that Walter was recorded with the surname Durrands in March 1901, however no reference is made to him by this surname in later documents. In April 1911 Walter was employed as a farm day boy and was residing in the family home at Croxton Kerrial, together with his father, a farm labourer, his mother and sibling, Albert, a schoolboy, born 1903 in Croxton Kerrial, also residing in the family home was Walter’s Nephew, Cecil Burrows, born 1910 in Croxton Kerrial. Walter also had the following older siblings, Sarah, born 1879 in Gunby, Lincolnshire, William, born 1881, Rose, born 1885, Eliza, born 1887 and Harry Hampson, born 1888, the latter four siblings were all born in Croxton Kerrial. Walter was awarded the British War and Victory medals. His older brother Thomas fell in action in 1916.
