He was the son of James S. Bass an Ironstone Labourer, born 1863 in Croxton Kerrial, Leicestershire and his wife Harriett, born 1864 in Woolsthorpe by Belvoir, Lincolnshire. Thomas was born in 1889 in Nottingham, his siblings were Gertrude, born 1895 in Muston, Leicestershire, Ernest, born 1898 and Ada C., born 1901, the latter two siblings were born in Croxton Kerrial, Leicestershire, in March 1901 the family home was at Blind Lane, Croxton Kerrial, Leicestershire. In April 1911 Thomas was serving as a Private with the 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment and was stationed at Fort St. George, Madras, India. The War Diary for today records. Day passed quietly except for bombing of D Coy whose reply with grenades and trench mortar appeared effective.
