He was the son of Robert and Hannah Johnson. His enlistment documents record that he gave his mother, Mrs Hanna Johnson c/o Mrs A. S. Immins of Wigston Street, Countesthorpe, Leicestershire, England as his next of kin. This was later changed to his brother Mr G. Johnson of 3, Wigston Street, Countesthorpe, Leicestershire, England. His trade or calling was given as Station Hand, he was unmarried. He also stated that he had served nine years previously with the Imperial Army and had been discharged as medically unfit. Information taken from his medical examination shows that he was 5 foot 8 ½ inches in height, weighed 150 pounds and had a chest measurement of 36 ½ inches. His complexion was described as medium with blue eyes and dark brown hair. He gave his religion as Church of England. His record of service gives the following information. Embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, Australia aboard A40 “Ceramic” 14th April 1916. Disembarked from A40 “Ceramic” at Suez, Egypt 17th May 1916. Admitted No.2 Australian General Hospital, Tel-el-Kebir, Egypt with influenza 29th May 1916. Transferred to No.3 Australian General Hospital, Abassia, Egypt 30th May 1916. Transferred to No.4 Australian Auxilliary Hospital, Heliopolis, Egypt with measles 31st May 1916. Discharged from hospital to Base at Heliopolis 14th June 1916. Embarked aboard H.M.T. Arcadian at Alexandria, Egypt 29th July 1916. Disembarked Southampton, England via Marseilles, France 9th August 1916. Embarked from England 16th September 1916. Arrived Etaples, France 17th September 1916. Proceeded to join unit 2nd October 1916. Joined 54th Battalion 4th October 1916. To England on leave 23rd September 1917. Rejoined 54th Battalion from leave 10th October 1917. Admitted 5th Australian Field Ambulance Re-Planus 15th October 1917. Rejoined from sick 16th October 1917. Detached for duty (5th Division, Australian Army Ordnance Corps. D.A.D.O.S.) 6th January 1918. Rejoined unit from detachment 13th May 1918. Killed in action 11th July 1918.
