Private John Henry 'Jack' Mawer, G/15088, 7th Platoon, B company, 12th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment.
Born in Coalville, Leicestershire on 11th November 1895. Died 17th October 1916, aged 20, in the area of Schwaben Redoubt.

Son of John and Annie Mawer (nee Cooper) of 59 Charnwood Street, Coalville. John was a goods guard on Midland Railway. They had five children: John Henry (b.1895), Charles Horace (b.1896), Louie (b.1898), Elsie (b.1901), Frank (b.1909).

Private Mawer enlisted at Loughborough and was formerly Private 4611, 5th Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment.

LOCAL NEWS

Private J. H. Mawer, of the Royal Sussex Regiment, is officially reported as missing. He is the son of Mr Mawer, a railwayman, of Charnwood Street, Coalville, and before the war was a regular member of the Coalville Men’s Adult School. He is 21 years of age.

LOCAL CASUALTIES

Mr and Mrs J. Mawer, of Charnwood Street, Coalville, have been notified by the War Office that their son, Pte. J. H. Mawer, of the Royal Sussex Regiment, reported missing on October 16th or 17th, 1916, is now concluded to have been killed in action. On the date mentioned Private Mawer was within three days of attaining his 21st birthday. When he joined up he was working as a platelayer on the Midland Railway, and previously was employed at Stableford’s. His father is also a railwayman. The deceased soldier used to regularly attend the Coalville Men’s Adult School, where his father is also a member, and at the school on Sunday morning, sympathy with the bereaved parents was expressed.
