He was the son of Peter Robertson, born on the 29th December 1863 in Caputh, Perthshire, Scotland and his wife Helen Robertson (nee Scott, married on the 10th June 1887 in Perth), born on the 14th May 1868 in Caputh. David Stuart Robertson was born in 1888 in Dull, Perthshire, his siblings were, Margaret, born 1889 in Redgorton, Perthshire, Jessie, born on the 1st June 1891 and William, born 1894, the latter two siblings were both born in Coupar Angus, Perthshire, James, born 1897, George, born 1898 and Elizabeth A., born 1900, the latter three siblings were all born in Kirkmichael, Perthshire, in March 1901 David was employed as a plasterer’s apprentice and was residing at Kirk Road, Milnathort, Kinross, this being the family home of George Scott, born 1866 and his wife Georgina B. Scott, born 1866 and their daughter Margaret Scott, born 1899. David’s mother died aged 40 years on the 21st August 1908 in Perth Royal Infirmary.
David married Hilda Louisa Wright on the 1st February 1913 in St. Catherine’s Church, Burbage (daughter of Abraham Wright, 1845 and Louisa, 1859). Hilda was born on the 26th February 1895 in Bedford, and baptised on the 29th September 1895 in St. Catherine’s Church, Burbage. David and Hilda had a daughter, Hilda Jessie, born on the 30th July 1913 in Burbage and baptised on the 31st August 1913 in St. Catherine’s Church, Burbage.
NOTES: David also had the following siblings, Helen, born 1904 and Betsy, born 1906, the latter two siblings were both born in Kirkmichael. No trace can be found of David’s location at the time of the April 1911 census. The Leicester Mercury article of the 11th August 1916 incorrectly records David’s surname as Macdonald. David’s widow, Hilda remained unmarried, and in 1939 was residing alone at 127, Queen’s Road, Hinckley, Leicestershire.
David’s army service enlistment documents do not survive, therefore the currently available information pertaining to his military service has been obtained from the following sources: - 1921 HMSO Publication, Soldiers Died in the Great War, 1914 - 1919, WW1 Service Medal and Award Rolls, Army Registers of Soldiers’ Effects, WW1 Medal Rolls Index Cards, WW1 Pension Ledgers and Index Cards and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Registers.

The War Diary records: 12-13 Jul-16 - QUADRANGLE TRENCH. Battalion relieved by 10th KING’S OWN YORKSHIRE LIGHT INFANTRY and moved back to FRICOURT arriving back about 5.00am on the 13th July. Casualties for the 10th to the 13th July 3 officers and 50 other ranks.
The War Diary records: 13 Jul-16 - FRICOURT. 12 officers and 600 men employed from 9.00am to 6.00pm carrying up stores of ammunition and grenades to MAMETZ WOOD. 2 Brigade conference as to orders for Brigade to attack BAZENTIN-LE-PETIT WOOD.
On Friday August 11th, 1916, The Leicester Daily Mercury published the following article on page 5, under the heading. – THE ROLL OF HONOUR. – LOCAL MEN IN THE CASUALTY LISTS. – News has been received by Mrs. Macdonald, of Burbage, that her husband, Pte. David Macdonald, of the Leicester’s, was killed on July 13th, both his legs being blown off by a bomb. He enlisted 12 months ago, and had served seven months in France. Prior to enlisting he was engaged on the Burbage Waterworks scheme. He was 28 years of age.
