He was the son of John Barnes a Coachsmith, born 1861 in Northampton and his wife Ellen, Born 1863 in Northampton. Charles was a Coachsmith and was born in 1885 in Northamptonshire, his siblings were Emily F., born 1883, William, born 1887, Phoebe E., born 1888, Walter, born 1889, Arthur, born 1891, Margaret Bertha, born 1893, John, born 1894 and Nellie Edith, born 1896, the latter eight siblings were all born in Northampton, Frank, born, 1898, Harry, born 1900 and Elizabeth May, born 1901, the latter three siblings were all born in Burbage, Leicestershire. In March 1901 the family home was at 11, Sketchley Road, Burbage, Leicestershire. In April 1911 Charles was employed as a Blacksmiths'Striker and was residing as a boarder in the family home of Henry and Sarah Wozencroft at 106, East Street, Coventry, Warwickshire. His younger brother Frank also fell.
