He was the son of William and Mary Ellen Hinman. He embarked for Belgium on the 5th January 1917, and took part in the operations in the Arras sector, and the third Battle of Ypres. On the 2nd April 1918 he was wounded in the abdomen, thigh and both arms with shrapnel, dying soon after his admission to the Casualty Clearing Station. He was buried with Full Military Honours, at Lijssenthoek Cemetery, Poperinghe. The Chaplain writing to his mother said:- “It will always be a comfort to you to remember that he was a brave man and that he did his duty. I am sure that God must have something very good in store for him and for all, who like him, have made the Great Sacrifice in the cause of Right.” His brother Charles Richard also fell.
