Source: Michael Doyle Their Name Liveth For Evermore: The Great War Roll of Honour for Leicestershire and Rutland.
He was the son of Mrs Elizabeth Lewin of Braunston, Rutland. After enlistment he was sent out to Gallipoli and took part in the evacuation of the troops at Suvla Bay. He was engaged with his unit in the desperate fighting around Lens when the Germans attempted to drive back the British by a series of counter attacks from the Lens-Bethune Road, the Sherwood Foresters met with considerable losses of both officers and men, and it was here that he that he was killed. His Sergeant writes:- “He stuck to his post bravely under heavy shell fire and was caught by a piece of shell, his death being instantaneous. He was a good lad, and was always willing to do his bit cheerfully under trying circumstances.”
