He was the son of John Daybell Robinson, a butcher, born 1864 in Bottesford, Leicestershire and his wife Caroline Robinson (nee Hand, married on the 14th August 1888 in the Parish Church, Bottesford, Leicestershire), born 1856 in Bottesford. John Richard was born on the 13th December 1893 in Bottesford and was baptised on the 14th October 1894 in The Parish Church, Bottesford, his siblings were, George, born 25th December 1888, and baptised on the 7th April 1889 in the Parish Church, Bottesford, Annie Winifred Hannah, born 17th November 1890, and baptised on the 4th January 1891 in the Parish Church, Bottesford, James William, born 9th October 1892 and baptised on the 27th November 1892 in the Parish Church, Bottesford and Victoria May, born 1898, and baptised on the 9th October 1898 in the Parish Church, Bottesford, all his siblings were born in Bottesford, in March 1901 the family home was at The Butcher’s Shop, 15, Market Street, Bottesford. In April 1911 John was employed as a butcher and was residing in the family home at 6, Queen Street, Bottesford, together with his father, a farmer, his mother and siblings, George, a farm worker, Annie, a home worker, James and Victoria, a schoolgirl.
NOTE: The family information collated from census returns, birth, baptism and marriage records, although appearing to relate to this casualty, cannot be fully and conclusively corroborated with presently available information, and therefore may not relate to this casualty and/or his family.
John first entered the theatre of war on the 18th August 1915 in France, he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory medals.
On Friday June 7th 1918 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL CASUALTIES.” The official casualty lists published during the past week have included the following local names:- From Wednesday’s list: Wounded. Machine Gun Corps. – Robinson, 22946 Sergt. J. R. (Melton Mowbray).
