He was the son of John Shaw, a farmer, born 1851 in Friskney, Lincolnshire and his wife Elizabeth Shaw (nee Herring, married on the 19th May 1875 in Toynton-All Saints, Lincolnshire), born 1852 in Hagnaby, Lincolnshire, and who was the daughter of Edward Herring. Frederick James, a schoolboy, was born in the 4th quarter of 1885 in Friskney, his siblings were, Phoebe Maria, born 1877, Walter Henry, a schoolboy, born 1879, Miriam, a schoolgirl, born 1880, Moses Edward, a schoolboy, born 1882, Charles Percy, a schoolboy, born 1884, Alice Rebekah, born 1888 and Elsie Mary, born 1890, all his siblings were born in Friskney, in April 1891 the family home was at Low Road, Friskney, Lincolnshire. In March 1901 Frederick was employed as an agricultural labourer and was residing at 10, Market Street, Bottesford, Leicestershire , this being the family home of his widowed paternal grandfather, Joseph G. Shaw, an agricultural labourer, born 1833 in Friskney. In April 1911 Frederick was employed as a farm servant and was residing as a servant at Church Farm, Bottesford.
The War Diary records: 22 Oct-14 - The Battalion had relieved the West Yorkshire Regiment the previous day at the Chemical Factory at Rue du Bois, they held the trenches and were heavily shelled by shrapnel and heavy Howitzers all day, casualties were Lieutenant Prain and Dods killed, Lieutenant Smeathman was wounded and died on the 24th October, eleven Other Ranks were killed and twenty five wounded. Frederick was one of seven Leicestershire men who lost their lives on this day.
On Saturday January 9th 1915 The Leicester Chronicle and Leicestershire Mercury published the following article under the heading. “LOSSES IN THE LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT.” – The following casualties in the Leicestershire Regiment are announced. – KILLED. Private F. Shaw.
