He was the son of Joannis D’Arcy Hartley, living upon his own means, born 1856 in Otley, Yorkshire and his wife Isabel Mary J. Hartley (nee Manley, married in the 2nd quarter of 1885 in the Wetherby, Yorkshire district), born 1854 in Westminster, Middlesex, and who was the daughter of George William and Charlotte Mary Manley. D’Arcy Joannes Josephus, was born on the 1st July 1890 in Malpas, Cheshire, and was baptised on the 2nd July 1890 in St. Werburgh’s Church, Chester, Cheshire, he had one sibling, a brother Richard Joseph M. Hartley, born 1889 in Spofforth, Wetherby, Yorkshire, in April 1891 the family home was at Chorlton Hall, Hall Yard, Whitchurch, Shropshire. In March 1901 D’Arcy was residing in the family home at Chorlton Hall, Hall Yard, Whitchurch, together with his father, living upon his own means, his mother and siblings, Richard and Dorothea Maria, born 1892 in Malpas and baptised on the 9th January 1892 in Malpas. In April 1911 D’Arcy was an Oxford undergraduate and was residing in the family home at Sludge Hall, Cold Newton, Billesdon, Leicestershire, together with his father, living upon private means, his mother and brother Richard, a Cambridge undergraduate. Joannes first entered the theatre of war in France on the 10th March 1915, he was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War and Victory medals.
On Friday July 21st 1916 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR.” – LIEUT. HARTLEY KILLED. – News has been received that Lieut. D’Arcy J. J. Hartley, of the 7th Dragoon Guards, was killed in action last Friday. Lieut. Hartley was the second son of Mr. J. D’Arcy, of Billesdon Coplow.

He was educated at Stonyhurst College, and at Eton College before matriculating at Merton College, Oxford in 1910. Whilst at Oxford he represented Oxford against Cambridge in the long jump at Queen’s Club in 1911 and 1912—winning the event in the former year with a jump of 21 feet 5 inches—as well as competing against teams from Yale and Harvard.

He joined up in September 1914, was made a Lieutenant on 24th December 1914, and served in France.

He was killed in action at the battle of Bazentin Ridge, the start of the second phase of the Battle of the Somme, on 14th July 1916.
