He was the son of Thomas Argent a Stone Quarry Rockman, born 1874 in Leicester and his wife Emma, born 1875 in Leicester. John William was a Stone Quarry Lad, and was born in 1894 in Leicester, his siblings were Frederick George, born 1901, Doris May, born 1903 and Sydney, born 1906, all his siblings were born in Leicester, in April 1911 the family home was at 38, The Crescent, Bardon Hill, Leicester. The War Diary for the 2nd October 1917 records. CHATEAU SEGARD. At 3.00pm the Battalion proceeded to the front line to take part in a general attack by the 2nd Army, and relieved the 1st ROYAL WELSH FUSILIERS in the front line.

LOCAL CASUALTIES

News has been received by Mr and Mrs Argent, of 11, Hotel Street, Coalville that their son, Pte. J. W. Argent, of the South Staffordshire Regiment, was killed in action on October 2nd. He was 23 years of age, and joined the Colours on May 24th last prior to which he was working at the Ibstock Colliery.
