He was the son of John Bennett an agricultural labourer, born 1860 in Desford, Leics., and his wife Sarah, born 1861 in Desford, Leics. John was born in 1884 in Desford, Leics., his siblings were, Ellen, born 1879, James, born 1883, Ann, born 1887 and William Edward, born 1890, all his siblings were born in Desford, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at Main Road, Desford, Leics. In March 1901 John was employed as a coal miner and was residing in the family home at 2, Colliery Row, Bagworth, Leics., together with his father, now a colliery horse keeper, his mother and siblings, Ellen, James, Annie, William, Robert, born 1894, Sidney, born 1895, Ernest, born 1899 and Lucy, born 1899, the latter four siblings were all born in Desford, Leics. In April 1911 John was employed as a coal miner and was residing in the family home at New Road, Bagworth, Leics., together with his wife of one year Louisa, born 1885 in Leicester, also residing in the family home was their nephew John Goodman, born 1904. The Medal Index Card shows that John was awarded the British and Victory Medals, roll H1/104 B, page 142.
