He was the son of Walter Carpendale an agricultural labourer, born 1868 in Whissendine, Rutland and his wife Sarah Elizabeth, born 1872 in Grantham, Lincs. Cecil Montague was born in 1896 in Whissendine, Rutland, he had one sibling, a brother Walter R., born 1894 in Whissendine, Rutland, in March 1901 the family home was at Frog Island, Whissendine, Rutland. In April 1911 Cecil was employed as a farm labourer and was residing in the family home at Whissendine, Rutland, together with his father, and mother, now a laundress and his siblings, Walter, Bertie, born 1902, Daisy, born 1905 and Joe, born 1907, the latter three siblings were all born in Whissendine, Rutland. He was in gentleman’s service and enlisted in the same month that war was declared. He embarked for France in July 1915 and was wounded three times, in September 1916, and in May and September of 1917, and gassed once in April 1918. He then received a compound fracture of the right thigh and left leg, caused by an exploding shell, and died in the 23rd General Hospital at Boulogne, France. The War Diary for today records. VAUDRICOURT PARK. At 4.00pm. Wire received from No.6 Casualty Clearing Station, PERNES stating that 2nd Lt W. COLES had died of wounds. At 10.00pm. Heavy shelling of RESERVE LINE and area around Battn HQ by High Explosive and gas shells. Captain T. BALL, A Coy sent down with P.V.O. Lt HAWLEY goes to First Army Infantry School.
