He was the son of William Bird Living on own Means, born 1856 in Rugby, Warwks., and his wife Charlotte, born 1855 in Rugby, Warwks. Herbert was born in 1892 in Rugby, Warwks., his siblings were William, born 1879, Maggie, born 1881, Carnie, born 1882, Polly, born 1884, Harry, born 1887, George, born 1889, Jack, born 1890, Lillie, born 1894, Nathaniel, born 1895 and Frank, born 1898, all his siblings were born in Rugby, Warwks., in March 1901 the family home was at 21, Arnold Street, Rugby, Warwks., in the Ecclesiastical Parish of St. Andrew. In April 1911 Herbert was employed as a Labourer and was residing in the family home at 1, Bridge Street, New Bilton, Warwks., together with his divorced mother and siblings, George, John, Nathaniel, Frank, Mary, Lillie and Margaret.
