He was the son of Evan and Louisa Annie Yates of “South View”, Nottingham Road, Ashby de la Zouch, Leics. His enlistment documents record that he gave his trade or calling as Butcher and his next of kin as his father, Evan Yates of Ashby de la Zouch, Leicestershire, England. He stated that he was unmarried. Information taken from his medical examination shows that he was 5 foot 10 ½ inches in height and had a chest measurement of 34 to 39 inches. His complexion was described as fair with brown eyes and dark hair. He gave his religion as Church of England.

Coalville Times article - Friday June 8th, 1917

Mr and Mrs Yates, of Packington Road, Ashby, have been notified that their son, Pte. A. H. Yates, Canadian Signalling Section, was killed in action in France, on May 25th. He enlisted in Canada in December, 1915, and went to France in September last year. He was 28 years of age.
