He was the son of Tom and Emma Marriott of Ticknall, Derbys., and the husband of Lucy Marriott. The War Diary for today records. Battn attack on BELLENGLISE and MAGNY LA FOSSE. Full report of operations attached. At 5.00am the Battn occupied ‘A’ position at ZERO minus 55 minutes (4.55am) the Battn less B Coy, advanced and took up a position in ASCENSION VALLEY, B Coy occupied the front line trench in position ‘C’. This Coy followed up the STAFFORD Brigade and occupied PIKE COPSE, the Coy was distributed by platoons from this position, in rear of the STAFFORDS along the Brigade front. They collected prisoners and ‘mopped up’ the area west of the ST QUENTIN CANAL. A, C and D Coy’s occupied position ‘C’ at ZERO plus 18 minutes, A and D Coy’s occupying front line trench, C Coy in Support. In taking up this position Lt Col F. W. FOSTER M.C. and acting Captain and Adjutant D. W. HOWARTH became casualties. 2nd Lt W. L. BASS established Battn HQ at G.29.d. 80.75 and handed over to Captain G. L. LEA on his arrival. Orders were issued for the Battn to advance at 10.15am and occupy the HINDENBURG LINE, re organise and take up a position in the BROWN LINE by 11.20am. This was done. The YELLOW LINE was attacked according to barrage table and captured, very little resistance was encountered. This operation was carried out by A, C and D Coy’s, B Coy following up in support. The trench running from G.24.d. 20.99 to G.30.b. 40.80 was occupied by D Coy, C Coy occupying line from G.30.b. 40.80 to G.30.d. 50.60. A Coy held trench from G.30.d. 50.60 to G.36.a. 58.80. Battn HQ were established at G.29.d. 80.68, the R.A.P. adjoining Battn HQ. The front line Coy’s pushed out outposts from their positions and held the YELLOW LINE, this was completed by 2.30pm. Captain J. C. LEDWARD took over command from Captain G. L. LEA when YELLOW LINE was reached, and handed over to Major G. R. A. BECKETT M.C. on his arrival at 8.00pm.
