He was the son of John Goodrum a tin smith, born 1868 in Downham, Norfolk and his wife Sarah Ann Goodrum (nee Allen, married in the 4th quarter of 1890 in the Blofield, Norfolk district), a dressmaker, born 1879 in Appleby, Leics. Charles William, was born on the 26th April 1898 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at 12, Tamworth Road, Ashby de la Zouch, Leics. In April 1911 Charles was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at Avenue Road, Ashby de la Zouch, Leics., together with his father, a tin smith, his mother and brother George, a schoolboy, born 1902 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leics. The background relating to the circumstances in which Charles lost his life are as follows; Off the Schouwen Bank in the North Sea there was a sharp exchange of salvoes before the German Destroyer S-50 (6th Torpedo Flotilla) discharged a torpedo which struck HMS Simoom and exploded her magazine, causing heavy casualties. The S-50 then escaped into the darkness. The destroyer HMS Morris took off all of HMS Simoom’s survivors and she was then torpedoed and sunk by HMS Nimrod on Commander Tyrwhitt's orders. HMS Simoom carried a complement of 90. Charles had been Mentioned in Despatches.
On Monday January 29th 1917 The Leicester Mercury published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL CASUALTIES” – Mr and Mrs Goodrum, of Avenue Road, Ashby de la Zouch, have received information from the Admiralty that the name of their son, William, who joined the Navy last year, does not appear in the list of survivors of the destroyer which was sunk in the fight with the enemy last week.
