He was the son of William Avins, a railway labourer, born 1852 in Sibson, Leics., and his wife Sarah Ann Avins (nee Harding, married 1871), born 1853 in Norton Juxta Twycross, Leics. in April 1881 they were residing in the family home at Snarestone, Leics., together with their children, Annie, a schoolgirl, born 1872 and Sarah Ann, a schoolgirl, born 1875, the latter two children were born in Sibson, Leics., and Harriett, born 1878 and Thomas W., born 1880, the latter two children being born in Snarestone, Leics. In the 1st quarter of 1887, Charles’ father died, aged 36. In April 1891 Charles Frederick who was born in 1882 in Snarestone, Leicestershire was residing as an inmate of the Ashby de la Zouch Union Workhouse, Leics., together with his widowed mother, a general domestic servant, and his siblings, Harriet, Thomas and Henry, born 1886, in Snarestone, Leics. In April 1911 he was serving as a Private with the 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, and was stationed at Fort Saint George, Madras, India. On Friday May 28th 1915 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “THE ROLL OF HONOUR.” – LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT CASUALTIES. The following casualties in the Leicestershire Regiment are announced by the Official Press Bureau:- Reported May 4th.

The War Diary for this day records that after relieving the 1st Battalion of the East Kent Regiment (The Buffs) on the 24th April, the Battalion were in the trenches at Rue du Bois, ninety two other rank reinforcements arrived. Casualties were one man killed and one wounded.

Ashby Soldier Killed

Private C. Avins of the 1st Leicesters was killed in the trenches at a place not named. He served eight years in India and prior to being called up last August, resided with his sister at Shelbrook, Ashby-de-la-Zouch.
