He was the son of Harry Griggs, a farm foreman, born 1866 in Wisbech, Cambs., and his wife Joanna Griggs (nee Darrington, married 1886), born 1867 in Walpole St. Peter’s, Cambs. Clement Percy was born in 1897 in Thorney, Cambs., his siblings were, Mildred, born 1888 in Upwell, Cambs., Eliza Ann, born 1889 in Christchurch, Cambs., Jessie, born 1891 in Walpole St. Peter’s, Cambs., Emily, born 1892 and Phillip Charles, born 1895, the latter two siblings were both born in Friday Bridge, Cambs., and Walter H., born 1900 in Thorney, Cambs., in March 1901 the family home was at Pasture House, Asfordby, Leics. In April 1911 Percy was employed as a labourer and was residing in the family home at Asfordby Hill, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Charles, a labourer, Walter, a schoolboy, and Leonard, a schoolboy, born 1905 in Asfordby, Leics. On Friday April 30th 1915 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “MELTON AND THE WAR.” – LOCAL SOLDIER KILLED. – News was received in Melton on Tuesday that Pte. Percy Griggs, of the 3rd Leicester’s, whose parents reside at Asfordby Hill Farm, and whose father is employed in the stores at the Army Remount Depot, was killed in action on April 23rd. The letter communicating the sad news, stated that Pte. Griggs and a German sniper were taking pot shots at each other, and the German put a shot through the loophole which killed the Englishman instantly. Griggs was called upon as a reservist on the outbreak of the war, and had been at the front for six months. He was about 22 years of age. On Friday May 28th 1915 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “THE ROLL OF HONOUR.” – LEICESTERSHIRE REGIMENT CASUALTIES. The following casualties in the Leicestershire Regiment are announced by the Official Press Bureau:- Reported May 4th.
