He was the son of John Stevens, a farm labourer, born 1856 in Desford, Leics., and his wife Mary Stevens, born 1856 in Earl Shilton, Leics. Alfred was born on the 17th September 1886 in Desford, Leics., his siblings were, Joseph Thomas, a schoolboy, born 1878, Sarah Elizabeth, a schoolgirl, born 1880, Annie, a schoolgirl, born 1885 and Francis Thomas, born 1889, all his siblings were born in Desford, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at Clay Lane, Desford, Leics. In March 1901 Albert was employed as a general farm servant and was residing in the family home at The Bull’s Head Inn, Desford, Leics., together with his father, now a railway platelayer, his mother, a laundress and his siblings, Annie a stocking trade machinist and Francis Thomas. In April 1911, Albert was employed as a carter and was residing in the family home at Main Street, Desford, Leics., together with his parents and sister, Annie, a knitting machinist. In the 2nd quarter of 1914, Albert married Annie Rebecca Rushin in the Barrow upon Soar, Leics., marriage registration district. They resided at Hollow Road, Anstey, Leics., and later at 17, Highfield Street, Anstey, Leics. Albert enlisted on the 10th July 1917 and embarked to join the British Expeditionary Force in France on the 5th November 1917, joining his unit, the Hawke Battalion on the 24th November 1917 and serving with this unit until he was killed in action on the 17th December 1917.
