He was the son of Alfred Cufflin, a boot and shoe trade clicker, born 1868 in Anstey, Leicestershire and his wife Louisa Cufflin (nee Hughes, married on the 3rd January 1892 in the Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire district), a boot and shoe trade machinist, born 1867 in Anstey. Edward Henry Hughes, was born in the 3rd quarter of 1899 in Anstey, his siblings were, Linda Harriett, born 1892 and Dorothy Adelaide, born 1898, both his siblings were born in Anstey, in March 1901 the family home was at Cropstone Road, Anstey. In April 1911 Edward was a schoolboy and was residing in the family home at Bradgate Road, Anstey, together with his father a boot trade clicker, his mother a boot trade machinist and his siblings, Linda, a boot trade machinist, Dorothy, a boot trade machinist, Alfred, a schoolboy, born 1901, Mary Louisa, born 1905, Eileen Hannah, born 1908 and Annie Diana, born 1911, the latter four siblings were all born in Anstey. Edward was awarded the British War and Victory medals.
