He was the son of Thomas Coates a sanitary pipe worker, born 1862 in Woodville, Derbys., and his wife Sarah Ann, born 1861 in Donisthorpe, Leics. Samuel George was born in 1890 in Albert Village, Leics., his siblings were, Elizabeth Ann, born 1884 in Woodville, Derbys., and Charles Thomas, born 1886 in Albert Village, Leics., in April 1891 the family home was at Stanhope Road, Church Gresley, Derbys. In March 1901 Samuel was residing in the family home at Hastings Road, Church Gresley, Derbys, together with his remarried mother and step father, Thomas Barnacle Measures a general labourer, born 1855 in Ashby de la Zouch, Leics., and his siblings, Elizabeth, Charles and Ada, born 1892 in Church Gresley, Derbys. In April 1911 Samuel was employed as a sanitary pipe maker and was residing in the family home at 9, Highfield Street, Swadlincote, Derbys., together with his step father, now a sanitary pipe packer, his mother and siblings, Charles and Ada.
