He was the son of Richard Sellars a baker, born 1863 in Derbys., and his wife Eliza Julia Sellars (nee Cooke), born 1862 in Thrussington, Leics. Walter, a schoolboy was born in 1895 in Ab Kettleby, Leics., his siblings were, Ida, a domestic mother’s help, born 1887 in Melton Mowbray, Leics., Arthur, a schoolboy, born 1889, Mabel, a schoolgirl, born 1892 and Ethel, a schoolgirl, born 1893, the latter three siblings were all born in Ab Kettleby, Leics., in March 1901 the family home was at South Side, Ab Kettleby, Leics. In April 1911 Walter was employed as a baker and was residing in the family home at Ab Kettleby, Leics., together with his parents and siblings, Ida and Lucy, a schoolgirl, born 1903 in Ab Kettleby, Leics., also residing with the family was his cousin Nellie Harrison, a schoolgirl, born 1903 in Leicester. Walter was discharged from the Royal Garrison Artillery suffering from sickness on the 24th August 1917, he was awarded a Silver War Badge, number 227466. He died in the 4th quarter of 1917. On Friday March 16th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “AB KETTLEBY” – MILITARY.- On Wednesday in last week Mr Walter Sellars, youngest son of Mr. R. Sellars, of this village, left home to join H.M. Forces, and we understand he has been attached to the Royal Garrison Artillery. We wish him every success. Friday April 6th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “AB KETTLEBY” – MILITARY.- We are sorry to hear that Pte. W. Sellars of the Royal Garrison Artillery, youngest son of Mr and Mrs R. Sellars, is lying seriously ill with pneumonia and rheumatic fever at the headquarters in Yorkshire. Mr and Mrs Sellars and Miss Edlin went on Friday, being summoned by telegram. We trust they will speedily receive better news as to his progress, and that he will make a rapid recovery. Pte. Sellars is well known throughout the district and is deservedly popular amongst a large circle of friends. He only joined the Colours some three weeks ago, and every sympathy is felt for him and the family. On Friday April 13th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “AB KETTLEBY” – MILITARY.- We are glad to hear that more reassuring news comes from Pte. W. Sellars, of the Royal Garrison Artillery, who we reported last week was lying dangerously ill in Yorkshire. We trust the improvement will continue and that Pte. Sellars will make a rapid recovery. On Friday August 31st 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “LOCAL AND DISTRICT NEWS” – AB KETTLEBY. ARRIVAL HOME.- We are glad to welcome home Mr Walter Sellars, youngest son of Mr and Mrs R. Sellars, of this village, who arrived on Friday afternoon. In March last Mr W. Sellars joined the Royal Garrison Artillery, but soon after was taken seriously ill, and was sent to the Military Hospital where he remained till he was discharged. We trust now that he has arrived in his native air, with the good home nursing he will receive from his mother, that he will make a rapid recovery, and regain his health again. On Friday October 12th 1917 The Melton Mowbray Times & Vale of Belvoir Gazette published the following article under the heading. “BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS” – DEATHS. SELLARS.- In loving memory of Walter, the dearly loved son of R. and E. J. Sellars, of Ab Kettleby, who passed into the Homeland on Oct. 2nd 1917. Age 22 years. In the same issue the following further article was published under the heading. THANKS. Mr and Mrs Sellars and family and Miss Edlin wish to express their thanks to all friends for messages of sympathy, and for floral tributes sent.
